Felids not in the UK

Hi,

I am hoping that someone out there will be able to help me with this, or has any information...

I am trying to find out if and where in the world (collection name/location) there are any captive:

Kodkod (Leopardus guigna)
Andean Mountain cat (Leopardus jacobita)
African Golden cat (Profelis aurata)
Sunda Clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi)
Bay cat (Catopuma badia)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

no bay cats anywhere. I believe that only two have been captured alive (I think one died from starvation and the other was released).

There are two Bornean clouded leopards at Lok Kawi Zoo in Sabah (one on display, one off-display). There are no doubt others in Sumatran zoos. Singapore Zoo had one at one stage but sent her away to an Indonesian zoo who's name escapes me to be paired with a male

kodkod and Andean mountain cat not outside South America. I think there may only be one or two kodkods in captivity there, and almost certainly no mountain cats

no idea about African golden cats

Thanks for your help...
Any idea about the names of anywhere with the kodkods? its hard to know where has what if the collection isnt 'officially registered' as having them...i.e. officially there are no bobcats in the UK but i know of a place with one.
I guess its the same with the African golden cats - local wildlife refuges etc...hopefully someone would have come across one on their travels?!

It looks like you are as big of a cat fanatic as I am. Bay cat no way. The only one that survived any length of time in captivity was released as stated above. It was a rescue from wildlfires that was held in an undisclosed rehab location. Art Wolfe was lucky enough to be invited to photograph it in a pen with natural vegetation. These are (and likely will be) the only clear photos of bay cat in existence.

Andean mountain cat has never been in captivity, but there are a couple of projects now tracking them in the wild. If you are really serious, it might be possible (I stress MIGHT) to hook up with them. Your best contact would probably be Jim Sanderson, head of Small Cat Conservation Alliance.

Kodkods it looks like you have discovered already - I think they have five.

African golden cat is no longer in captivity anywhere in the world - I am pretty sure of this. Many years ago there were a few here and there and I wish I could have photographed one before they were gone. It is always possible one will show up somewhere some day, so I am holding out hope. Last one to be listed in ISIS was a zoo in Guinea Bissau.

Cool thanks for that info....Yeah im a cat person, i work with them...i have worked with the 26 species kept in the UK, and am now trying to get the last 10 (or as many as possible) under my belt too!

wow, where did they come from? (imported or locally bred?). Are they of an age suitable for breeding ?

EDIT: I just realised you probably meant South Africa, not South Australia :D

South Africa!

No idea of their origin but the two that I saw are certainly a potential breeding proposition. Their owner is endeavouring to breed them.

you should have brought them back with you! Just declare them as white lion cubs...the government people at the Australia end wouldn't have been able to tell the difference :D

@ Steve Robinson - Can you send me a PM with contact info for african golden cats?

@Mr Felidae - I notice you do not have marbled cat on your list (another extreme rarity) - does that mean you have seen them already? If not, one place that lists it is Himalayan Wildlife Park in Sikkim, India (not listed in ISIS). They also have a photo of a subspecies of leopard cat I am not familiar with that looks very cool - very heavily spotted and marbled, much more so than other subspecies.

Hi, Yes i have worked with a breeding pair of Marbleds plus young. I have sorted out working with Pampas cats + Kod Kod, just trying to arrange travel. No luck still with the African Golds, Andeans, Sunda Cloudies & Bay cats

In a previous thread here, the owner of the RSCC in Kent is showing a great interest in bringing marbled cats into their collection.

Have Cincinnati ever had any of those species? Given their impressive cat collection I wouldn't be surprised if they've kept at least 1 of them (golden cat?) in the past...

I don't think Cincinnati ever had african golden cat, but they did have the last asian golden cat in the U.S.

They also had marbled cats, but before I ever went there. Coincidentally, I posted a new thread yesterday listing the original (1985) inhabitants of the remodeled Cat House at Cincinnati Zoo.

Maybe I was thinking of Asian Golden Cat, then. I just seem to remember reading that some US zoo had African Golden Cats but can't remember which one it was.

There's a programme on Sky, called The Zoo, which is filmed at Auckland Zoo, they had successfully bred Golden Cats, I don't know how old the programme is though, or even if they are African/Asian.

they were Asian golden cats and the zoo currently only has one individual (unless it has already been sent away as is planned)
