this seems to have slipped under the Australasian Zoochat radar, from October 1

Wellington Zoo's Malayan sun bear Chomel has been put down.

Chomel, 21, collapsed in her enclosure on Tuesday with stroke-like systems.

Zoo staff made the decision to euthanase the elderly bear yesterday after she failed to respond to treatment, general operations manager Mauritz Basson said.

''Staff here are obviously very sad at losing Chomel - she was in many ways a special animal and had only recently passed her veterinary health check,'' he said.

Chomel had three cubs and ''for quite a long time'' was the only successful breeding female in Australasia.

Conservation and veterinary science manager Katja Geschke said a CT scan showed no tumour or abscess in her brain, making a stroke the most likely diagnosis.

''The closer examination of her brain by Massey University will hopefully reveal the full extent of what happened.''
