I'm taking a shot at writing books outside of the genre I normally write. I decided to do a few stand-alone stories where the main characters are animals facing issues they'd face in the real world or face other animals causing issues. So far, for the wild dog book, I know the main antagonists will be poachers, but I also am going to throw some other interspecific conflict in there, likely with lions. It all starts with a tragedy in the pack being blamed on the lions when the true enemies are stalking the savanna to earn an income.
I have an idea for a jaguar book, too, and all of the stories will take place in the same world.
I like to compare these stories to being similar to movies like The Lion King and The Jungle Book, as in the animals talk (only from animal POV- humans just see their talking as whatever noise those animals normally make) but it's not some crazy fantasy world. It's likely I'll have to self-publish it as I know how difficult getting a literary agent is, so I'll have to edit it a good bit myself and maybe with some friends' help.
I'm not sure how popular these would be, but I know quite a few books with talking animals become known and liked, maybe not on the level of Harry Potter or The Hunger Games, but still widely known. My goal is to entertain and educate, as although these will be intriguing stories with fights, villains, and some funny parts here and there, I also want to show a wider audience how animals live in the wild and even introduce some species that aren't well known.
To connect further with the audience, I may also add relatable issues the characters will face and overcome mental obstacles in their journey, such as the wild dog runt in my current story wanting acceptance from his father and using any means necessary to prove he can be just as good as his siblings and the rest of the pack.
Thank you for listening, and I'll see where this takes me.
