Chester Zoo Finally seen tuan - but at a cost!!!

Went to Chester Zoo yesterday, after originally setting off for Southport Air Show but having a detour as weather not looking so good for flying old planes.

To my delight, as I peered through the gaps on the log fence, there was the fella in question Tuan in full glory, went back later and he was there again! He spent most of the day outside so I think he may be overcoming his dislike for the outside world! He was very interested in peering over from a height at what was going on around him! Not sure what he was eating but it ended up round his lips!! :)

It made my day .... that was until I tried to sit on the railings over at the Chip Enclosure to get a different angled view of Tuan over the fence and dropped my camera from a great height .... broke the lens so it's knackered - only had it since January!! :(

So, all in all, an expensive detour from the Air Show! Still, I finally got to see the magnificent father to the two Bornean babies. Will try to attach a a photo to this message (before the camera was dropped of course!).

Lots of activity amongst the sumatran orangutans and the chimps and also finally got to see Ema's baby rhino (sorry can't remember name!).

Oh bad luck Andiii.

I recently had a holiday in Ireland. On the second day my brother's camera broke down. On the third day my nephew's batteries were flat and his charger wouldn't work. When my photos came back all four films had scratch marks. The annoying thing is I did clean the camera every time I loaded a new film.

mmmm it seems you were just not destined to have photos of that Holiday!! :( I'm so careful normally to have it strapped to me too!! The one time I didn't I dropped it! Grrrrrrr Guess what Father Christmas is going to be asked to bring me this year???

How many giraffe's did you see? Have any of the hybrid's gone yet?

Strange coincidence- the same happened to me at Twycross last week- I dropped the camera and my zoom lense broke in half(its stuffed) At least the camera still works.

That's very strange!! As you say, at least you got the gorillas first! I hate being without a camera - defo wasn't on the top of my spending list right now though! :( I hope to have another visit to Twycross soon myself, to see the Orangs (or course) and the Gorillas!

Sorry to hear about your camera. I sympathise because I also found it very difficult to balance on the chimps' railings, but fortunately my camera and lens were supported by my monopod. I think Chester should reduce the height of the logs around Tuan's paddock or make those railings easier to sit on. Sometimes you can also get a decent view of him from the picnic tables beside the gate for the keeper's ford across to the ring-tailed lemur's island.

I honestly think they want that exhibit off show so that it doesn't look a bit rubbish next to the other orang areas. Can see where they're coming from if so but it's a bit of an odd decision nonetheless.

I agree, but hopefully after HoA the funds will be available to build the rest of RoRA.

It just makes visitors want to see what is in there all the more- especially if they catch glimpses of a big male Orangutan in there.
