SOUTH Australia's Monarto Zoo is abuzz over the birth of its first-ever baby chimp.
First-time mother Zombi, 19, gave birth to the baby - gender still to be determined - in the early hours of Tuesday. Acting senior keeper of primates Laura Hanley said both mother and baby appeared to be doing well.
"This is such an important day for Monarto Zoo, we couldn't be more excited for the new family group," she said.
"It's extremely enriching for great apes to have infants and it adds to the social wellbeing of the group to have a range of ages amongst the troop."
She said the youngster would also help the zoo's other chimpanzees learn parenting skills.
The head of life sciences at Zoos SA, Peter Clark, said the birth was important for breeding diversity of chimps in Australia.
"If Tsotsi is the father, as we suspect, this is also a bonus as he's the only male in all of Australasia with his genetic background," he said.
DNA tests will be used to confirm the baby's paternity when it is older.
It is hoped the baby will become an ambassador for its species and build awareness for the plight of the endangered animal worldwide.
The baby will make his public debut today.
