A DNA analysis of the gray whale that turned up off the Namibian coast has found that it is of the highly endangered west Pacific stock, which mostly occurs in Russia and may number only 200 in the wild.
Although the analysis has confirmed the origin of the whale, it is still unknown how it reached Namibia - it could have moved through the Northwest Passage past Canada and down through the Atlantic, swum down and around the southern tip of South America or crossed the Indian Ocean.
