"AT the moment it can be said that we have bred 7 and lost 8- hardly much room for complacency but enough for hope as now the mothers have learned the art of raising thier own babies: of the 7 infants, only the oldest two are orphaned"

I think the first-ever gorilla born in captivity was female Goma, born in 1959 to Achilla and Stefi (male) in Basle zoo. Goma was handraised and is still living in Basle today. In 1961, Achilla gave birth again, this time she had a male infant whom she raised herself. This was famous Jambo, who later became the silverback in Jersey and sired a dozend or so offspring himself. Jambo was the third gorilla born in a zoo worldwide and the first one to be mother-reared. Interestingly, despite being handreared, Goma reared her only son Tamtam herself, who is still alive in Wuppertal Zoo but never had any offspring.

First mother-reared Gorilla was 'Jambo'(1961) as described by Yassa above.

First ever born in captivity was 'Colo' (Baron x Christina) born in Columbus Ohio, USA. in 1956. She was handraised, is still alive and is currently, at 53 the world's oldest captive Gorilla.

Just the other day Colo was reported to have 'escaped'- it seems a service door was left open and she just walked out but did not get out of the apehouse building. Part of the zoo was evacuated anyhow. I believe she was soon coaxed back in again. I hope she took her walking stick....:)

Testing to see if I can still post on this %(*#$)* group, which hasn't allowed me to in months!! Jane Dewar, Gorilla Haven
