Flamingo Park Zoo

I was recently offered an opportunity to buy an old Flamingo Park Guidebook (66 pages) dating from the early 70's, which I've never seen before. In fact, I think it covers the period I'm missing on my website. There are a couple of interesting things about this book and the first one is the cover. It's a water-colour painting of a monkey and looks very 60's with the title 'Flamingo Park', without the word Zoo. Flamingo Park was renamed Yorkshire Zoo in 1968, and indeed one or two of the photos are from the 60's, but the rest, including a map, suggests the early 1970's.

For instance, they mention the bears, but the b/w photo is of them in the first bear pit during the early 60's. There is an advert at the back of the book advertising Dudley Zoo. It says, 'See Cuddles the 3 ton killer', but it shows him at Ocean World!

One advert had me laughing.... the Scotia - Leading in Leisure advert. It large letters it says 'Swinging Holidays' !! I don't think that's quite what they mean!;)

The Zoo guide is both a reference and an information book. It explains about the animals they keep and groups them into polar regions, tropical forests, temperate forests, grasslands, mountains and dolphins. There are both colour and b/w photos and even a fold-out colour map included..

Quiz: Can anyone remember the name of the Southern Elephant Seal? I didn't even know it had a name, so I was surprised to read what it was! There's a b/w photo of him in the book.
