Florida Aquarium Florida Aquarium Species List 2025

I've finally gotten around to compiling a species list for the Florida Aquarium in downtown Tampa, from my visit in June of this year. As is the nature of Aquariums, a lot moves around from time to time, and many species switch on or off show. Many are also not signed, but I did my best for identifications, those with question marks (?) indicate a perhaps surprising or rare species that I'd like to get additional confirmation on. Some enclosure names are official, others are descriptions I made, but to most, I just assigned numbers. As always, there will be some errors here or there, but I hope this provides a nice baseline for the aquarium, which I really did enjoy, the collection and exhibitry here is great! I would recommend the aquarium for any fish enthusiast.

SNS = Signed, not seen

Once again, an excellent aquarium and collection that I enjoyed thoroughly, with a number of major rarities, such as some of the Butterfly and Angelfishes and native gulf coast species. Morph’d was a fun gallery as well, and reminded me a bit of the amazing, now closed, Underwater Beauty exhibit at Shedd.

Very detailed and thorough list! Do you happen to have a photo of that maskray you spotted at Stingray Beach? My records have them as having a bluespotted/Kuhl’s maskray (Neotrygon kuhlii), which typically have truly blue spots rather than blue-edged white ones per Fishbase, but I’d love to know if maybe they’ve gotten a new one or I was told/determined an incorrect ID. I wasn’t able to get a great photo of it as it was buried.

Yeah, this is one I really wasn't sure about. The individual definitely seemed visually different than the N. kuhlii I've seen before, hence why I leaned to N. trigonoides, although this could just be interspecies variation. My other motivation to leave it as N. trigonoides was to attract the attention of elasmobranch enthusiasts such as yourself! I have some not-so-great shots, ID help would be appreciated! I will say I do think N. kuhlii is far more likely just from a captive presence standpoint.

Happy to oblige haha. I am not what I’d call an expert on this species and its cousins at all, but the lack of a defined edge on the spots and their more truly blue color makes me think it is indeed just a N. kuhlii, perhaps a slight variation on what you’d typically see. No doubt a wonderful species though, I love those little guys.

do they not have penguins before
At one time they were only behind the scenes and then taken out for special walk around or events. Then they made a long term but still temporary exhibit near the splash pad that has the penguins inside but outdoor viewing through a window, there are some pictures in the gallery but the exhibit wasn't great.

The penguins are still brought out for special events.

In a few months they will be starting construction on a much larger outdoor exhibit, along with a new sea lion exhibit.
