Some of you who are recent members of ZooBeat might not be aware that the magnificent lion striding across the top of the page is not in Africa but was photographed at Monarto Zoo, South Australia by our beloved leader, Sim.

THAT'S why we Aussies love our open-range zoos! :)

Ara, any idea how big that area with the Lions is?, I think Monarto has a big furture in the zoo world

One word: Wow..!

I never would have guessed...

It is a year and a half since I was at Monarto but I think the lion enclosure was about 10 acres or maby a little more. In real life I dont think it looks as big as it does in that photo.

Monarto has many massive enclosures, and the lion area is no exception. However, their website doesn't have an specifics in terms of size of the area, and in truth it should really be updated with more information on how many animals they have and the general layout of the collection. Being able to ride through an exhibit with at least 16 giraffe is a true highlight, and overall it is great to see this open-range zoo continue to expand with the upcoming chimpanzee exhibit.

The Adelaide/Monarto website does have a lot of information on the ten-year giant panda loan that starts in 2009. There is a FAQ section that contains tons of details about pandas, and the plans that are going to be implemented to house them.

Ah well, a few decades ago Taronga used to cull its surplus Elands and feed them to the cats. (No surplus now!)
