Forums going offline shortly for move to new server

File transfer is still going - but based on how much data is now on the destination server compared to the origin, I think we're getting close. I will post again once the file transfer is finished - the forums will go offline shortly after that.

How long will the server be offline for?

The forums are back online on a new server with substantially more resources than the old server had.

There may be some things which aren't working correctly - so please do report any anomalies you find.

I'll also be interested to hear people's experience with performance - is it faster/slower than the old site was to navigate around? Are photos loading quickly or taking a while?

The new site is lightning fast to navigate compared to the old one. :)

Before, it just about had a stroke trying to load travel threads (because of all the photos); but I clicked on one just now and the photos appeared instantly.

It's definitely much snappier, I've seen a lot of difference in how fast it loads threads with a lot of photos. Certainly seems to be working considerably faster/smoother so far!

I just returned from being away for several days and I'm getting a bunch of time outs and bad gateways. I open each comment/new post notification in a new tab, then go through and read them all, so I don't know if I'm opening too many in a short time? I've always done it like that, though, and it's never been an issue before.

I don't have any issues anymore since moving to the new server. It is slightly slower but that is a low price for a forum that functions for me.

I didn't have any issues on tuesday, which was the last day I'd been on before today.

Yes, I can see issues occurring right around the time you reported it (3:05am Sydney time)

There's a bunch of slow database queries at the same time - but I'm not yet sure if that's a cause or a symptom.

The timeouts do seem to still be happening - but significantly less than they were before I moved servers.

I don't think I'm going to be able to do much more to improve things until I can get the site upgraded.

Thanks for the info - it's very useful to understand the experience of end users.

I'm interested to know what you feel is "slower"?

Is it the latency? ie it takes longer for the page to start loading after you click a link
Is it the loading speed? ie once the page starts loading, it takes longer to finish loading
Are photos slower to load?

I'm still trying to quantify the impact of moving the server, so any feedback you can give would be useful, thanks.

If it's something that's difficult to describe - that's fine, sometimes a site just "feels" slower.

I had at least a dozen within a timespan of 10 minutes or so, I think. In general I seem to be having less, but I've never had a bunch at one time like that before. I understand :) Just wanted to let you know.

The main difference I've noticed is that pages with multiple photos - either threads with photo embeds or media gallery pages with 20 photos - load significantly faster now; for me it's usually instant now after a 2 second latency. Regular threads or individual photo pages don't seem much different - but the speed for those was already pretty good for me before the server move.

I also haven't had an issue with time outs or bad gateways since the move.

I would say it is the loading speed.

I've had one timeout since the upgrade, but it was fairly brief. Certainly better than before when I was getting multiple per day.

In general the site feels slower to me, I've noticed it takes slightly longer for likes to appear after I hit the like button for instance. But other things, such as loading pages with lots of photos and my alerts appearing when I hover my mouse over that area are notably faster.

This has been my experience as well - overall pages are taking a bit longer to load after clicking on them and sometimes likes and posts take a few seconds to go through. But threads with a large number of photos are loading much faster, and I agree alerts also seem to be working easier.
