Chester Zoo Four rare oryx calves born at zoo

I know this news was somewhere else, but there is now another two calf’s a good year for this species at the zoo, I think only two years ago 0.9 died during the year, any know if there was a common problem then?

9 females out of 10 died in 2005, and 0.8 arrived. These are the current herd.

I don't know why all 9 died in the same year, unless it was euthanasia for some reason.

Its a question I keep forgetting to raise when I manage to speak to a keeper.

But at least this year they have had nearly 50% succes rate.

Is the father the small male which was shown on Zoo Days being beaten up by the females? If so, he has certainly come on since then

He is the only adult male there. He certainly has learnt to fend for himself.

Yep thats right, his done well plus he is able to hopefully bred with all 9 again next year
