Chester Zoo Four rare oryx calves born at zoo

9 females out of 10 died in 2005, and 0.8 arrived. These are the current herd.

I don't know why all 9 died in the same year, unless it was euthanasia for some reason.

Its a question I keep forgetting to raise when I manage to speak to a keeper.

But at least this year they have had nearly 50% succes rate.

I posted these ages ago, but this seems to be a good place to put them.

These are photos that I took when the first two calves were a couple of weeks old.

Is the father the small male which was shown on Zoo Days being beaten up by the females? If so, he has certainly come on since then :)

He is the only adult male there. He certainly has learnt to fend for himself.
