Chester Zoo free bus for rail passengers

Excellent news.

Chester rail station is quite a trek from the bus station (20 minutes I think) and then you have to buy a full day ticket. This direct train will make it cheaper and easier to reach the zoo.

I think this is an example of a zoo taking the idea of sustainable development seriously. DEFRA seems to be pushing sustainability through the Zoos Forum. In the past few moths many British zoos have added web pages about the ways in which they are trying to make themselves more sustainable. Since I had to teach my animal care students about sustainable development last term, I welcome all these examples - I just wish they had done this one sooner ;)

Just thought i'd post my experience of the zoo shuttle. (i posted it in one of the other threads as well, but it's more appropriate here)

The bus runs every 20mins from the station and the zoo and it drops you off at the pedestrian entrance.

This is a massive bonus because I arrived at the zoo at about 10:10 so I pretty much had the entire East Zoo (usually the busiest half) to myself for over an hour!! Places like RORA and the chimps were empty of people and the bush dogs, pudu and serval were all out and active.

I hope it becomes a permanent feature (it is still on a trial period) and that it isn't only used in school holidays.

n.b you have to have a train ticket otherwise you can not board the bus
