From the looks of this video it will be excellent. The normal savanah with rhinos, hoof stock and giraffes looks wonderful. Also the huge elephant exhibit which from the looks of the video will be at least 3 acres is great. I like the use of vistas to create one grand savannah. This exhibit sort of reminds me of Bioparc Valencia.

Hopefully the finished product resembles what is shown in the 5-minute virtual tour as it could be spectacular. The enormous African Lodge is a highlight, and it is great to see a fairly small zoo step up into the big leagues of zoological design. Portico Group is a superior company and I have high hopes for their latest project.

It is a very exciting project and will expand the size of the zoo by about a third. This project in combination with the new sea lion exhibit promise to really make this zoo a destination for zoo nerds and the general public. The Fresno Zoo renewal is an interesting combination of completely new exhibits (the Africa Adventure, sea lions) and renewal of old exhibits (much of the reptile house has been/is being remodeled and the old sea lion exhibit is being renovated into an African otter exhibit).

Alright, here's a question I have. Could anyone tell me why the Chaffee Zoo needed approval from the National Park Service to proceed?

The park that they are in had some infrastructure that had been paid for with a federal grant that came with rules that they needed federal permission to change the park. The zoo expansion got bogged down by a small group of NIMBYs who literally made a federal case out of everything and delayed approval of the project for an extended period.

According to the zoo's facebook page, the zoo has acquired a male sloth bear from Fort Worth and it will be exhibited in the old bear exhibit. The zoo will also be getting a female.
