Overall Louisville was a rollercoaster zoo for me. It started from okay to high to low to high to low and ended okay. Even though it wasn't a bad zoo, it is still at the bottom of the list for me (St. Louis, Columbus/Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Louisville).
African Savannah
(http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-african-lion-exhibit-291324/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-east-african-crowned-crane-291316/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-wattled-crane-exhibit-291307/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-hartmanns-mountain-zebra-exhibit-291231/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-dromedary-camel-exhibit-291230/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-addax-exhibit-291228/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-warthog-exhibit-291223/)
-Great Species.
-Poor fencing exposed.
-Found some trash in the bongo and addax exhibits.
-Couldn't believe the elephant exhibit (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-african-asian-elephant-exhibit-291320/)
-Some exhibits all gravel (zebra)
-Great giraffe/vulture savanna (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-masai-giraffe-ruppells-griffon-291322/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-ruppells-griffon-vulture-masai-291225/)
-Love the giraffe house-very unusual species to be in such as African area. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-masai-giraffe-indoor-stalls-291313/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-stellers-sea-eagle-exhibit-291311/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-kopje-exhibit-291309/)
Monkey Island
(http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-monkey-island-291232/)
-Great climbing structures on the island.
-In the indoor area the bedrooms could use some work but it still is okay to me.
-Across from the indoor exhibits is a cotton-top tamarin exhibit that looks very similar to this (http://www.zoochat.com/556/feb-2012-emperor-tamarin-exhibit-259366/)
Gorilla Forest
(http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-patas-monkey-exhibit-291241/,
-Plenty shade for humans, not so for animals.
-Great above then face-to-face viewing for the pygmy hippos. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-hippo-falls-291239/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-hippo-falls-291237/)
-Very hot in the Gorilla Sanctuary.
-Great rotating idea of exhibits per gorilla family.
-Gorillas have a choice to go in and out. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-1-2-indoor-gorilla-291242/)
-1st exhibit lacks shade-no climbing but very large and a hill that hides them completely. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-western-lowland-gorilla-exhibit-291240/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-western-lowland-gorilla-exhibit-291234/)
-2nd exhibit has plenty of shade and a medium sized tree but pretty bare other than that. Both habitats had were very lush. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-western-lowland-gorilla-exhibit-291244/)
Tiger Tundra
(http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-tiger-tundra-291245/)
-All around great exhibit. Perfect job on shade, pool, and making it look like and actual tundra/forest.
-Great bird's eye and face-to-face viewing.
-Did find the tiger eating a pencil though (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-amur-tiger-291246/)
Glacier Run
-Greatest and newest area at the zoo.
-Wonderful ice wall and broken down vehicle road in the large bear habitat.
-Face-to-face, underwater, above and underwater viewings. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-rotating-bear-exhibit-291333/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-rotating-bear-exhibit-291250/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-rotating-bear-exhibit-291249/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-rotating-bear-exhibit-291248/)
-A bare 'mining complex' full of tires and metal bars somehow works for the bears. There is even a parked truck in it where kids can sit in the front seat and watch the polar bear sit in the trunk. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-bear-alley-mining-compound-291331/)
-Crisp clear water for both seal and bear exhibits. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-california-sea-lion-harbor-291332/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-california-sea-lion-harbor-291263/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-california-sea-lion-harbor-291252/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-rotating-bear-exhibit-underwater-291251/)
-Seems like the new sea eagle exhibit will turn out as one of the best in the world (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-stellers-sea-eagle-aviary-291261/)
Lorikeet Landing
(http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-lorikeet-landing-291266/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-lorikeet-landing-291265/)
-Pretty low aviary but also very lush and full of life.
-It is to remain pretty quiet in the flight cage to give the birds some peace.
-You sadly have to wait your turn until everyone else is out. 15 people are allowed in at a time.
Wallaroo Walkabout
-Didn't feel like also waiting in line but have seen photos and it looks like an Aussie masterpiece.
South American & other exhibits
-The South American exhibit is the largest animal habitat at the zoo and seems acres long and look like it never ends. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-south-america-291268/)
-It is one large grassy meadow for rheas and guanaco.
-Was very disappointed with the cougar, snow leopard, and macaw exhibits. Small cages. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-cougar-exhibit-291269/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-snow-leopard-exhibit-291270/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-hyacinth-macaw-exhibit-291335/)
-Very large and wetland looking area for flamingos and crested screamers. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-chilean-flamingo-crested-screamer-291337/)
-It ends with two great exhibits for ibises and storks along with a long enclosure for manded wolves. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-waldrapp-ibis-european-black-291336/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-maned-wolf-exhibit-291340/)
Cats of the Americas
(http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-ocelot-exhibit-291272/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-jaguar-exhibit-291274/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-bald-eagle-exhibit-291275/)
-Overall not what I expected. I assumed it would be a large attraction but it was just 3 exhibits just about 3 feet from each other all in one path.
-The ocelot exhibit looks as near perfect as it can get, but the jaguar exhibit is pretty small and just doesn't fit the animal's needs. It ends with a large open-topped bald exhibit exhibit.
Islands (see main attraction photos below)
-The area starts out with a pavilion of lushly planted exhibits for mainly bats, tropical birds. In here you can catch a glimpse of an open-topped arctic penguin paradise, up close with Cuban crocodiles, and the indoor area for the Komodo dragon. (http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-world-birds-exhibit-291292/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-cuban-crocodile-exhibit-291361/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-penguin-coast-291301/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-indoor-komodo-dragon-exhibit-291296/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-prehensile-tailed-porcupine-exhibit-291294/, http://www.zoochat.com/579/sep-2012-rodrigues-fruit-bat-exhibit-291293/)
-There are four total enclosures for the world's first rotating animal attraction of its kind-1 indoor for mainly the apes, and 3 outdoor exhibits more suited for the ground animals. Each outdoor one has climbing opportunities, but no brachiating opportunities for the apes (although I have seen videos of the siamangs swinging of the ceiling wire.
-Islands is most likely the 2nd or 3rd best part of the zoo.
