Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo remain my preference as they link really well to the GFA. Koala are the quintessential Australian species though, so I could well imagine them taking preference here. Melbourne is an internationally recognised zoo and it would certainly appeal to the overseas visitors.
I think regardless Melbourne need to start filling up the empty exhibits

Agreed. In addition to that exhibit, they have the exhibits that formerly housed Mandrill, Eastern bongo and Malayan tapir (none of which they appear to have immediate plans for).

If they don’t want to commit to long term development of these exhibits (in the case of the tapir exhibit, it makes sense to wait until the peccaries pass on and redevelop the whole area), they could at least look at short term (ideally exotic) filler species. Capybara for the tapir exhibit; Lowland nyala for the old bongo exhibit etc.

Happy New Year Melbourne Zoo chat family!
On safari and today saw Bat-eared Fox. I think this would be an awesome alternative to Fennec Fox which is quite inactive.
Just a thought.
(Also we needa 2024 thread)
Have a great year!!!

Happy New Year!

I was thinking it makes sense to have a combined Zoos Victoria thread this year as the Werribee thread only reached four pages of discussion (albeit in three months) versus the 152 pages of discussion on Melbourne Zoo we’ve had this year. It will also give us the opportunity to discuss Kyabram and Healesville, which in this thread usually takes the form of what can we send them from Melbourne Zoo (I’m looking at you, Zillie :p).

I’ve created this thread:
