I'll be happy to discuss!

All these species lists for obscure Malaysian zoos are really interesting! They look mostly like what I'd expect from a small zoo in Europe or something, and then they'll have something totally different like Javan Rusa and Malayan Porcupine.

Yes, Malaysia has quite a lot of small zoos that are new to me too!

I see, that's interesting to hear. Malayan Porcupines and Javan Rusas are very common here, many zoos have either of them.

On the other hand, Bat-eared Foxes are extremely rare here, and I drove 800km to this zoo to see this species.

Interesting, Bat-eared Fox is a very common zoo species here in the US.

25 holders listed on zootierliste is nowhere near "very common"? And also, yh bat-eared fox is quite rare in Asia, but it seems to popped up sometimes in smaller facilities and i think there's some holder in China as well.

ZTL is undercounting them, they're pretty common in unaccredited zoos.

Really?
This species is very rare in Asia, and there's nowhere in Japan that has this. This was my first time to see this species.
After seeing greater galagos make a suspicious return to Japan, I wouldn’t be surprised if bat eared foxes make a suspicious return despite the rabies law.

Yes, Greater Galagos are back in Japanese pet industry. Sad we can't see it at a zoo.

Yes, since a lot of overseas zoos have Bat-eared Foxes, it will be a future possibility. They will be able to import them any time, it just costs a lot due to transportation and quarantine issues.

Yes, I've noticed that they popped up in China. I heard from a trader that Thailand breeds a lot and sends to other zoos, but I don't know how accurate that info is...

There’s to my knowledge at least one mass importer/breeder of bat eared foxes in Thailand.

It is a lot easier for Malaysian zoos to have exotic than native small mammals. Typically zoos have either very common natives (like palm civets and porcupines) or exotics like raccoons.

kind of interesting/weird. Malaysia has almost 300 endemic reptiles and amphibians, yet the sole
reptile in this collection found in Malaysia is not one of them.

Yes, I feel that too. Reptile and Amphibian species found in a lot of small private zoos are mostly the same with those commonly found in the pet market worldwide. It's Corn Snakes, Iguanas, Leopard Geckos, Sulcata Tortoises, Pacman Frogs, etc. I feel it's a good thing, since those species have a sustainable captive population.

On the other hand, larger government zoos have more native species.
