Sula the female Lowland anoa is pregnant again, the park's Facebook page has confirmed. Mia her daughter is now at Chester Zoo. The father of the calf is Widget the old male at Chester.

Fantastic news for this little collection. About time they had something to celebrate.

I think this will be the third time they've bred them, don't here very much breeding in the UK about these little hoofstock nowadays.

New arrival: Galloway has now recieved a new male Red Panda from Paignton as a future breeding male. His name is Ruben :)

New arrivals: Three Serval have taken up residence in the former Caracal enclosure. They were donated by a private keeper

Re: Anoas

I have some information, I've listed the info I have below;

1.1 'Sula' and 'Widget' - they have bred two offspring (Afaik, maybe more) and are expecting there third calf this summer.

The male 'Widget' was born on the 3rd December 2000 and the female 'Sula' was born on the 21st May 2001.

There offspring;
0.1 Mia born 27th July 2009 - Chester Zoo
0.1 Brownie born 15th July 2007 - Paignton Zoo

Brownie has been renamed Rachel or Fern by Paignton Zoo.

The park has just announced on Facebook that their female anoa is in labour! :D

Lets hope everything goes ok.

I'm going this way in a few weeks, its possible that I may stop off there.

I'm likely to visit here next week sometime, as I'll be going with Hel and her family to stay in a holiday cottage about 5 miles from Kirkcudbright.

Haven't exactly heard the best things about the place, but it should be worth a visit to make my mind up for myself :) Plan to attempt a stocklist whilst I'm there, being as the animal stocklist on their website is seriously out of date.

@Tea Loving Dave,
Sure enough a good update (and particularly so on the "new anoa")?
Enjoy your visit!

I have and hence no news of any anoa (what you see if you scroll down is tamaraw).

So, I would still love some news (as I expect the calf is due soon or is there already).

Going by what has been previously written on here about GWCP, I think that the zoo has probably improved the quality of its enclosures somewhat in the past year or two; things were a fair bit better than I had been let to expect.

There is still plenty of room for improvement, however - some signage was out of date, and a few enclosures were somewhat overgrown with vegetation whilst others seemed to have too little.

However, I did enjoy my visit.

A few additional notes:

Species no longer held by the zoo, which are still listed on ZTL as being in the collection, include common palm civet, caracal, dhole, raccoon, siberian weasel and bush dog.

However, among the species which have recently joined the collection are indochinese leopard cat, striated heron, mikado pheasant, marbled teal and eurasian wolf.

A full stocklist will be posted once I have a chance to check my notes.

So basically the species that'd be of most interest to us* zoochatters then... ;)

*Well me at least! :D
