San Francisco Zoo Gay Penguins End 6-Year Relationship

The media is so retarded. There a dozens of pairs of "gay" penguins and flamingos and other birds in zoos across the world. Most of them aren't actually gay; they are just pairing up due to a lack of females.

I agree, and the world of the media is an insanely bizarre world all on its own.

Honestly, to be "gay", don't they have to have gay sex? As stated above, these penguins weren't gay -- only pairing up in male pairs -- something that many of us straight humans do.

But often these animals do form a pair bond and exhibit pair bonding behaviors...behaviors that would be comparable to what people do when "dating".

With their current financial situation they can use any publicity they can get to stimulate attendance (they were down quite a bit from the previous year). Unfortunately, the penguin exhibit is so antiquated. They have more penguins than places for them to nest so they've added little wooden shacks to accommodate the overflow and it doesn't enhance the exhibit at all.

OK, hopefully this will "stimulate" attendance! (lol)

Actually, I've always enjoyed this exhbit as it offers great viewing of a lot of penguins and (at least until they added the wooden shacks) it's somewhat reminiscent of what I would picture their natural beach habitat to be.

Not, unless two men sharing a flat and closing door to any stranger are dating.

Same-sex couples exist in many colonial birds. There, the nest-site needs two birds - one defends the nest when another goes to feed. Female same-sex couples are also widespread. They normally mate with paired males and incubate the double number of eggs with, usually, low success.

Maybe there just roommates

Maybe this is funny, and it's certainly not meant to be "anti-gay", but at least in humans it's not right to assume that 2 males who share living quarters are gay. I shared an apartment with my brother for a year and (Goodness, gracious) we never thought about having sex with each other!

To some degree, I think the same applies with animals.
