Hi y'all,
First, thanks to the moderators and contributors to this great site. I've been impressed with the tenor of argument and discussion. Enough to actually join and then to join in.
I found this site as part of my research to support my activism against the proposed takeover of Werribee Open Range Zoo (Melbourne, Vistoria)
I'm not employed in animal welfare, not a particularly militant animals rights activist or even disposed towards civil disobedience but the layers and layers of what's wrong with this proposal are a bit beyond what I'm comfortable just sitting with without acting.
Obviously the animals themselves can't defend themselves from this takover and perversely, the actual keepers of the zoo, their custodians, have been rendered just as powerless by a gag order by a government that espouses democratic process? What the hell is this?
So, I've joined cos I want support from like minded people, for me and the campaign to block this. I believe that this is just the thin end of the wedge; when it comes to the carving up and exploitation of social capital, Australia is up there on the world stage can-canning with the rest of the dancing fools.
But, scathing hyperbole aside, this cosy business arrangement between our elected State Government and a private corporation makes me quite nauseus and of all the evils in it, if there comes a guarantee that the Zoo's stewardship of the livestock, breeding and conservation programmes and the community education activities will be secured, then for me, for now, it will be enough.
