The closing sentence reveals how attitudes have changed. It is listed presumably as a good thing, while we now know introduced species are one of the chief causes of environmental degradation. Here is the sentence: "The release could be a milestone in the program to establish non-native game population in the state."

To the best of my knowledge they are still there (and quite a large herd). Several years ago the adjoining White Sands National Monument had to build a boundary fence to keep them out because they were damaging the monument.
