Port Lympne Wild Animal Park giraffes and zebras at port lympne and howletts

There's now a question mark regarding the purity of the late Longleat female, Jolly. During her lifetime (late 80's, early 90's? to September 2008) she produced 10 calves, One of which was Amber. From what I understand the majority of collections holding her calves have been advised by the studbook not to breed the affected individuals for the forseeable future.

Maybe the bull wasn't pure.

That might be the case. However Amber is definetly believed to be a hybrid and it's a different bull that sired her calf (The young male at Port Lyme) and the final calf from Jolly (Century) who's now housed a non breeding male at Cotswold's Wildlife Park. It would be bad luck for Longleat to get two hybrid bull's in a row

Amber was bred at Longleat, so how does WMSP fit into the picture?

Amber's Dam (Jolly is it?) was mated by one of two bulls whilst she was at WMSP. Depending upon which bull mated Amber will have a baring on whether she is a pure Rothschild or not. The assumption, so I am told, is that the non "Rothschild" bull at WMSP mated her. Therefore she is considered by the studbook to not be pure, and why she left Port Lympne to join the non-breeding hybrid group at Flamingo Land.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't know that Jolly was ex West Mids.

They have all passed away in recent years, but would this mean that Jolly's first calf Churchill (was the breeding male at Dudley until his death in 2008) and his daughters (both deceased in 2010) were also hybrids?
