Gleek!

Having returned from an inspiring trip to Iceland (a very underated country), I've found myself with a thirst for glee. I was just wondering whether there are anymore 'gleeks' out there on zoochat and if anyone knows when the new series will be out.

Thanks in advance :D

Also if there are any gleeks out there what's been your favourite episode/moment/performances?

I'm Zoochat's only member from Iceland as far as I know. Thank you for your kind words about my country; much needed after our volcano messed up the travel plans of millions worldwide just a few weeks ago. It could have been nice to meet up; I could have walked you around the small Reykjavik Zoo at least.

English is not my first language, so what is a 'gleek' or 'glee' exactly? I checked on Google, but no answers there, and Wikipedia says that a 'gleek' can be:

Gleek (Super Friends), pet monkey in the animated series Super Friends
Gleeking, a type of spitting that usually occurs while yawning
Gleek (fan), a fan of the television series Glee

Never mind, I realise now that it is a TV show, although I'm not sure how you connect it with Iceland! :)

There isn't connection between the two. It's just that I've come back from iceland and have a pregnant style craving for glee! So I thought i'd see if zoochat could quench my thirst. sorry for the confusion.

Thanks - it's nice to know what that particular behaviour is called!

Believe me, it's not your volcano what people are most angry at, it's more the problems with icesave and landsbanki, and the billions of euro's britain and the netherlands want to get back. But that's a mistake of our's and your's government, and not from the people of iceland. But what exactly is the connection between gleek's and iceland?

Can you tell us a bit more about Reykjavik Zoo, I didn't know there was one, and there are no posts in the Iceland section.

Massive Glee fan (the only one I know lol) Sue Sylvester is a legend lol :D

Zoos and Glee can this site get any better :p  :D

It is a tiny place that has changed very little in the 20 years it has been opened in May 1990. It only has Icelandic farm animals and the wildlife of Iceland but it is a reasonable collection with nice enclosures, even if not exotic, and allows for a pleasant walk, even if there must be two years since I went last time as it hardly ever changes.

A small pool for some Common Seals and a tiny aquarium represent the Icelandic seaside. Birds are mainly represented by domestic pigion species (Iceland has substancial pigion breeding) and farm birds; although the new mayor of Reykjavik (the zoo is city-run) has expressed interest in having a Puffin Cliff added; aparently he got the inspiration from Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle some years ago. He would also like to add Polar Bears and other nordic wildlife but we'll see, it will start and end with money I guess.

Due to Iceland's strict quarantine laws, animals are rarely imported or exported, although later this year they will obtain some snake and lizard species to start a small reptile section; this however is nothing to loose control over, the species due to arrive can probably be seen in even the least ambitious UK collections and even the pet trade. Aparently they sent the staff abroad to learn how to keep these things, but then, this stuff is exotic here! They are to arrive in August and I'll go with my camera and supply the Zoochat Gallery with photos from there; already there are a few by 'Talli'.

And believe me when I tell you that for some weeks in the autumn of 2008 I was too afraid to get in touch with British and Dutch zoo friends that I had known for years. I only learned later that some had never even heard of Icesave. I had never been before been ashamed of being Icelandic; the word had become dirty. For a while I thought that I could never again visit the UK or the Netherlands to see zoos, at least without saying I was Norwegian or Swedish. I'm not trying to be funny, this is all true.

Thanks Baldur for the reply. So it looks like Reykjavik Zoo won't be getting proboscis monkeys then?

Do Icelanders eat puffins? Or is that more of a tourist thing?

I know what you mean about national shame. I was living in another country when my home town hit the news for the wrong reasons, so I had to say I was from an suburb that no-one had heard of.

Ah nah, the Reykjavik Zoo won't be getting Pandas or anything like it. But I have high hopes that there will be a Nordic section of some kind in the near future. If the new mayor realises that Polar Bears are virtually impossible to obtain, not to mention expensive to keep, then maybe he'll settle with Brown Bears. All I know is that he's very interested in the matters of the zoo; which is good, I think most of us know cases where the matters of the city zoo are practically ignored in high places.

We eat Puffins, it is not a tourist thing whatsoever, but it is not a Sunday night steak, more traditional, like our infamous shark (you may have heard the rediculous stories of how we process it :D). The hunting season is in late summer so in the autumn you can usually find it in shops. However, there are grave concerns right now that the Westman Islands population (the biggest in Iceland and hence traditionally the supplier of most meat) is not reproducing properly, i.e. not enough chicks are reaching adulthood. Thus, for the second year in a row they are cutting the hunting season down from 30-40 days to 5. And what's interesting, the hunteres don't complain; they love their puffins and respect them; beautiful birds and special icon of the Westman Islands.

OK, I just have to ask:

  1. What is Icesave?
  2. What is landsbanki?
  3. What does puffin taste like?

Cheers

:p

1. & 2. are Icelandic banks which advertised heavily in the UK and Netherlands, had much better rates of interest than local banks, and consequently many people put their savings into them. Unfortunately they then went bust and huge numbers of savers have lost money.

3. can't answer this one

I've never watched Glee but I have been to Iceland. With an interest in geology and birds, I thought it was absolutely amazing. I would have loved to have seen Eyjafjallajokull in action, but settled for watching it online at:

http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-thorolfsfelli
(it's just emitting steam now but is still worth a look)

and I keep up-to-date every day with what's happening in Iceland at:

Iceland Review Online: All You Need to Know About Iceland: News, Volcano eruption, Politics, Business, Music, Literature, Films, Art, History, Traditions, Nature, Travel

I hope I can return sometime.
