Golden Bellied Mangabey import

I spoke on Monday with Tjerk, who is very enthusiastic about moving these animals, there is alot of work involved getting everybody "in the boat" , we will not be getting any of these US individuals. As in the past we had sent a hand reared female to San Diego ( although Tjerk said she is no longer alive) but I believe she did not contribute to the population in the US ? Our animals all originate from WB individuals, so our group is with Budapest very important, if we are too continue with this species in Europe, which I am sure is now the case. Its just a case of finding new "holders" for the species, then he can form new pairings.

Thanks @Butch for the clarifications. I am happy this rare looks very good for this rare mangabey species within EAZA. I even see some scope for the individuals now in the zoos of Moskva and Yerevan. Even though admittedly, Armenia is now the illegal conduit between West / Central Africa and Russian Republic, the increase in potential founder animals will positively impact the EAZA/EEP program.

Furthermore, I would – even under these circumstances – advocate that illegally acquired / confiscated individuals of any given species of interest to the EAZA/EEP and / or ESB programmes would be much better off within a regulated conservation breeding programme than as a genetic dead end to languish forever in a legal loophole …

Recently Moscow and Armenia (ErevanZoo ?) have imported individuals from the Congo, but as they are "potentially" illegal, it would be difficult to bring these too Germany, although at least these animals have been saved from the bush meat market.

I recently saw a Golden-bellied Mangabey at the Moscow Circus (being used for photos) - presumably from the same source.

I'm looking forward to hearing the stories of that and the amazing avatar picture you're rocking.

Bloody good news, this - shame the Port Lympne pair are geriatric and so unlikely to do much good if moved to Suffolk Wildlife Park too.

I don't know why the PL pair have never bred but I don't think much attempt has been made to promote breeding actively e.g. by changing or adding partners. It was said on here they had the chance to acquire more at one stage, but turned them down. I'm unclear why.

I hope this pair going to AA have a better reproductive future ahead. I'd prefer to see more than a single pair too, but the low numbers in Europe may just not allow for that.

Burgers' Zoo has confirmed the arrival of 1.2 Golden-bellied mangabeys. Now behind the scenes, but soon they will live together with the gorilla's on their island.

Golden bellied Mangabey

The end of an era; after 32 years of husbandry with this species all animals ( 2.4) have been loaned out to other collections;
1.0 to Arnheim
1.1 to Port Lympne
0.3 to Magdeburg
We have found in Magdeburg an interested partner, they will receive a Budapest bred male from Romania, he hopefully will continue as a breeding male in Magdeburg Zoo. When Wuppertal has renovated the old Monkey house, we will go back into keeping the Gbm, with at least the offspring from our collegues in Magdeburg.:)

PL/Africa Alive

1.1 to Port Lympne

I would be interested to know how many GB Mangabey Port Lympne now have and which (if any)animal they have sent to AfricaAlive/Kessingland subsequent to them receiving this new pair.

Hi Pertinax,
I understand that PL have kept Wuppertals male LUBALA and sent the female BUNJA to Kessingland.

Thankyou.

Do you know the names/sexes of the other GB Mangabeys currently at Port Lympne?

The only female at PL is SIMONETTA born Budapest 1997, her partner EDWARD (1995) I think is dead, also Budapest born, but came via Paris JP. Thats the reason why Wuppertals male is now there.

I believe SIMONETTA is their original female, which I have seen a number of times over the years, and has never bred at Port Lympne. This female is now 19 years old- rather unlikely to breed?

Do you know if the male EDWARD was a replacement at Port Lympne for the very elderly one(was he called SANCHO?) which perhaps died, or is it one and the same animal?
