Golden Eagles are Snatching up Deer now in Russia

European Golden Eagles trained by falconers can be specialists on roe deer and are able to kill grown roe deer male on their own. Even wild Golden Eagles sometimes (very rarely) take down adult roe deer in Slovakia. A weak female Sika deer in deep snow can apparently become a pray for Berkut, the largest Golden Eagle subspecies from Far East.

Eagles normaly get their hooks on head and on the front part of deer torso when they attack. They kill probably by punctuating the lungs and causing pneumotorax, I guess? I´ve watched trained eagles during hunts, but´ve never actually asked falconers about the exact technique. First body part an eagle normally starts to eat is throat - they torn out trachea, so that any roe deer that may be still alive when it falls dawn and the bird gets its beak there is lost.

Is that real? How is it supposed to have killed the dear?

It's real. I've watched that YouTube channel for some time now and that guy never posts anything false without addressing it as so. He mainly just talks about interesting animal topics and facts in his videos.

Wedgtail Eagle often kill adult female gray Kangaroos and I know people who have seen them do this. A female deer would not be any stronger.

Especially not one bogged down in snow.

This is a very impressive video, imagine how formidable Haast's Eagle must have been! Could probably have taken down cows if still extant in NZ.

Haast's Eagle evolved to feed on Moa. I suspect that any Maori it encountered, especially if they were young, sick or elderly, wouldn't have relished the experience.

Thank you all for this interesting information! In the text to the video linked by DesertRhino it is stated that they kill slowly by puncturing the lungs of the reindeer.
