In Japan, a total of 11.10 takins are kept at Tama Zoological Park, Zoorasia, and Adventure World. All founders are 3.3 takins from China. The most recent import of takins was 2.2 takins in 2010. Before 2.2 takins were imported in 2010, Takins had inbred by one pair but Takin's genetic diversity is not a problem currently. There were export plans to Germany in 2017 and to Indonesia in 2021 but those have not been carried out. If Indonesia imports female takins from Japan and breeds them, the Liberec Zoo plans to import offspring of takins born between a male of Liberec origin and a female of Japanese origin from Indonesia to renew the bloodline.
