Zoo Leipzig Gondwanaland

Thanks for the links Zooplantman. I am really looking forward to seeing this hall completed. Can anybody tell me more about the species in Gondwanaland? And which species will inhabit the outdoor exhibits?

Please have a look at the first promotional film.....

Has the tarsiers been confirmed?

Any idea from where they will get them? considering that there is none in Europe and very few in the USA. Hardly any outside of Indonesia.

@Kiglezi

Zoo director Dr. Junhold has brought out a list concerning the intended animal species last year in december.
There are some species on it I do not think, they will get them, for example echidnas, pacaranas, aye ayes and tarsiers.

The clouded leopards have been canceled in favour of annother endangered species (the potential enclosure will have an area of 450 square meters). One brace already arrived from the UK and was placed at Tierpark Berlin for the meantime, but will stay there and not come to Leipzig, Dr. Blaskiewitz said.

One Komodo dragon (born at Chester Zoo in 2007) is still waiting at Rotterdam Blijdorp Zoo to be shipped to Leipzig next year, as well as 3 giant river otters at Dortmund Zoo. False Gharial will come from a farm at Thailand next year.

Giant otters are a bit controversial, because they are unable to rear pups on public display and design apparently makes it difficult to periodically close part of exhibit.

But maybe they switch to asian short-clawed otters or capybaras. And tarsiers into bushbabies or whatever.

I am also waiting to see this hall completed! Perhaps the most ambitious zoo project ever.

@Jurek7: If I recall correctly, these particular three giant otters are siblings; breeding is probably not intended.
Maybe they will switch to less ambitious species in the end, but who knows? Leipzig also got its pangolin when nobody really believed it...
@kiglezi: I don't think that there are any tarsiers left in American zoos. ISIS list one Philippine tarsier at San Diego Zoo, but also a non-existing male Golden Snub-Nosed monkey...as well as various other zombie/fantasy files for SDZ. And about tarsiers outside of Indonesia: there should be at least some, like the ones on the Philippines ...;)
@BjoernN: About the tortoises listed: Manouria emys (nice!) as a prominent example...

You are right, three of them (Manouria emys) came from Dusseldorf last year. They are behind the scenes of the aquarium at the moment and still babies....

The three giant otters are siblings indeed, "Madija" (born 2005), "Xingu" and "Tupi" (born 2007). Their parents are "Sol" (she died in 2008) and "Rufus" (behind the scenes at the moment).

A female chinese pangolin is just waiting for its transport to Leipzig at Taipeh Zoo. Probably the zoo is giong to keep a brace this year yet.

@Jurek
The Giant otters will come definetely, in addition to asian small clawed otters co-housed with prevost's squirrels.
The Giant Otters will get a 500 square meters enclosure, including many places to hide and several boxes behind the scenes to rear pubs in the future without closing the house.

Gondwanaland does not open until 2011. But the rest of the zoo is also very good. Pongoland is absolutely fantastic!

zoos and economic colapse!

This looks brilliant. There is something amazing when a whole enviroment is recreted indoors! Then to have a boat ride! Thats just showing off:p

The dollar per animal ratio seems very high in these exhibits.

So, are they going to get clouded leopards? If not, which animal will replace them? But, I must say, I think I have already planned a visit to Leipzig in 2011! This Gondwanaland looks awesome! :)

You can also see two new videos on Leipzig's homepage.
