His two females were 'Npongo' and 'Nandi'- and they produced roughly the same number of infants each- both started to mother-rear after their third baby. 'Gorillas Galore' will show you which babies are from which female.

Jambo also fathered one baby(Sakina) by female 'Kishka' who was received in exchange from Howletts. Kishka also had one stillbirth by Jambo too.

The current breeding female at Jersey is 'Hallali Kahilli', daughter of Jambo x Npongo. There is a photo on the Gallery of the male 'Asato' at Beauval Zoo in France. He is Hk's younger brother and the last baby fathered by Jambo at Jersey Zoo.

Technically correct- but Jersey always pronounced it 'Yambo'- it is Swahili(or something) for 'good Morning'

I always assumed that the keepers in Basel Zoo (where Jambo was born) gave a Swiss-German pronunciation to this Swahili word - so of course he knew that his name was "Yambo" and the people at Jersey couldn't do anything about it.

BTW, Orang09, you might be able to track down Richard Johnstone-Scott's biography of Jambo, which will tell you all you need to know. I'm sure it's out-of-print now, but there must still be many copies in libraries.

I remember seeing some old TV footage of Dr Lang going up to the gorilla enclosure(present house) at Basel and calling Achilla to come over- he said it as 'aCHillaa', 'aCHillaa' with a soft CH...

At Jersey when Jeremy Mallinson mentioned Ya Kwanza(also on a T.V. programme) he pronounced it very strangely- sounded like 'Az massa'. I don't know what is the correct pronounciation.

Asato is the lastborn living offspring of Jambo, but Kishka's stillbirth by Jambo was in March the following year, six months before he died.
