Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust Gorrilla names 1977

In 1977 on a school trip at Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust we were being given a lesson on gorillas with two hand reared baby gorrilas present, one of those baby gorillas kept coming to play with me and kept grabbing my hand to take me back to its keeper, everyone was laughing at the time and recently I have been thinking of it. I have searched the internet to find the names and although I can find reference to them I cant find their names so I cant trace what happened to them next, just out of curiosity did they stay at Jersey Zoo or did they go somewhere else to become part of another zoo breeding colony? Can anyone help?

Can't help you there, but our moderator 'Pertinax' no doubt can; he has always come across as someone who seems to know everything about every ape that has ever been brought into or born in captivity. Maybe an overstatement but if so, it goes close.

Pertinax, the stage is yours! :)

In 1977, probably Zaire and Tatu.

Or they could possibly have been Mamfe & Assumbo (both born in 1973 so four years old by 1977 and perhaps too boisterous to meet visitors?). Zaire(born1974) and Tatu(born 1975)sound more likely.

Zaire lives at London Zoo.
Tatu is(or was) at Oklahoma in the USA.

Just checking some old copies of "On the Edge", Spring of 1978 shows Kumba and Salome being held by keepers (and the caption stated they were transfered to London Zoo, but didn't state if the photo was recent or not). The first 1979 issue has a photo of Zaire and Tatu playing on the construction site of the new Gorilla complex. Not too sure if this helps clarify matters any!

Of course, it might have even been Bamenda.
