Greater Vancouver Zoo Greater Vancouver Zoo News

It was just announced via the zoos Instagram that Arun, the zoo's male red panda, is being transferred back to the Assiniboine Zoo:

"In the best interest of red pandas everywhere, Arun has recently departed from the Greater Vancouver Zoo. Following a recommendation from the Species Survival Plan (SSP), Arun was paired with another female, as his time with Paprika did not result in any offspring. He has now returned to his birthplace, where he’ll continue his important role in red panda conservation."

Will certainly miss his presence during my visits :'( but given the ages of both him, and the resident female Paprika, this transfer makes sense from a breeding perspective.

How old is F Paprika now, the upper side of reproductive age for FF?

A herd of 5 Burchell's Zebras are the latest animals to join the zoo:

Nice to see some new species (0.5 Burchell's zebra) and the 1.7 common waterbuck too!!! Any idea where both (breeding) groups have moved up from?

The zebra are presumably not purebred Burchell's. I expect that they're just being called Burchell's because their phenotype most closely resembles that subspecies. Genetically, they can't really be anything else other than generic Plains zebra.

Unless, of course, these zebra were imported directly from South Africa/Namibia/Botswana. But that would be fairly big news, and I'm doubtful that Greater Vancouver has the money to do such an undertaking.

The waterbuck and the zebra were transferred in "from an eastern zoo that’s undergoing operational changes."

So yeah, not imports from Africa.

Paprika is 8 years old.

I was first suspecting Parc Safari to be the eastern facility where the waterbuck and the zebra came from. Parc Safari maintains a big herd of both species and they could have came from there.
