People often don´t realize that. When you say: "There´s only 800 of them left and 200 in this National Park", they go "Oh, 800 is a big number, that´s not so bad"..yeah.. One war,one natural disaster or one disease.. and entire population´s gone in a matter of days..
I also feel that too much is being expected from in-situ conservation in some places. As Stefka points out, one big hit on a park and species can rapidly go from being rare to being extinct.
We ought to have learnt this by now; the European Bison's narrow escape from extinction was nearly a century ago. And without zoo herds, it would have been lost.
