Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton Zoo News 2019

Visited today, the hyrax aren't on show at the moment, and part the outside viewing of the binturong has been cordoned off. I'm hoping this means something exciting...

Also saw some pinky spiny mice and the blue spiny lizards, but no sign of the geckos.

One of the Binturong is in the Hyrax section now, so I was thinking that there might be babies next door.
Also, I noticed a tarantula in the gecko tank and wondered if it had been moved to the cafe area @ro6ca66 mentioned previously.

We saw the female pop out in the afternoon. Not sure if she's had babies or is about to pop. Could see prominent nipplage though so very hopeful :)

The hyrax were in with the ring-tailed lemurs (near the cockatoos/galahs) when I visited on 29 Sep. Of course they may've been moved off-show since.

Ah, that's the one place we didn't look, so they could be on show still. We always tend to miss those guys :(
 
Having not visited Hamerton for nearly a year, upon my visit yesterday I noticed significant building work up near the Malayan tigers. This looked like new carnivore holdings and a singular large building.

Anyone ideas? Are Hamerton due to get more big cat species?
 
A small (but very pleasant) bit of news from Hamerton. The initial group of spinifex hopping mice imported this year from Queensland has trebled in number and today a group of four male and four female mice were transferred to Cotswold Wildlife Park.

The article also mentions some bigger projects underway but delays in paperwork and the bad weather has meant these will be announced in the new year.

Hamerton have posted a piece on their website that briefly reflects on the past year (including the good news that visitor numbers are up 16% on 2018) and also looks to the year coming. The post mentions the number of species planned to arrive and depart during 2020. The list comprises:

Mammals: 5 new species to arrive and 2 to leave
Birds: 8+ new species planned to arrive, with no departures
Reptiles: 10 new species to arrive, with 1 planned departure
Fishes: 12 new species to arrive

A couple of reptile new arrivals have been announced on Hamerton's website. First, a female mangrove snake has gone on-show, having arrived from a private breeder. While she is settling in, the search will begin for a suitable mate for her. The other new arrival is a pair of baby Eastern water dragons from Germany. The young dragons will stay off-show while they establish themselves and put on some growth.

Does anyone know when the ringtails and ringtailed possums will be on display? Planning another rewarding trip down to Hamerton for the New Year.
