Hangzhou Zoo Hangzhou Zoo News

Currently, only three zoos in China publicly display hairy-fronted muntjacs: Hangzhou, Beijing, and Hefei. Fortunately, the number of hairy-fronted muntjacs currently in use in Hefei and Beijing is still quite considerable. Meanwhile, the Hefei Zoo is planning to relocate, and it is hoped that they can be rebuilt better in the future.

Looking as a good improvement on past - probably - bare exclosures. I would think and perhaps you can confirm that also the individual deer and the deer groups in the exclosures do behave more naturally now!?!

Can you tell me a little more about the number of South China sika and hairy fronted muntjacs at Hangzhou Zoo?

I also remember one of our esteemed PR of China Zoochat forumsters observed only 3 zoos globally exhibit the hairy-fronted muntjacs?

BTW: Both deer species look absolutely in good condition and I particularly love the hairy-fronted muntjacs! How lovely and interesting they look...., makes me want to find out more about the species...!!!!

In 2022, Hangzhou Zoo introduced 5 South China sika deer from Qingliangfeng. In 2024, one calf was born. If correct, the current population should be 6 individuals (excluding the hybrid sika deer previously kept by the zoo).

The population of the hairy-fronted muntjac is difficult to determine. Hangzhou Zoo has been consistently breeding this species, but only a limited number of individuals are on exhibition. The total captive population across the entire zoo is estimated to exceed 20.

@YuanChang, thanks for all the additional information!

I am so glad the zoo is now making work of focussing on the rare and endangered deer taxa of PR of China. I do hope over time the management of Hangzhou Zoo phase out and neutralise the hybrid sika deer group they still hold!
