Harpy Eagle

There already Harpy Eagles in the UK. The falconer at Warwick castle has one and others are in private collections.

While I don't doubt the truth of this I find it beggars belief that a private falconer in this country can keep a harpy eagle, let alone find one to purchase. Incidently a quick search of Warwick Castle's website and the very small info about the falconry display mentions nothing about harpy eagles.

my understanding was that there were no harpies in the UK. I've certainly never heard that Warwick Castle has one!

The Harpy is going to a guy in North Yorkshire it isn't yet in the U.K but I'd imagine it'll be used for private flying.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, are there any Harpy eagles in the UK at this moment in time?

Zootierliste lists four zoos in Europe that currently hold harpy eagles but not a single one of them is in the UK (three are in Germany, with the fourth being Beauval, France). So the short answer to your question is no.

If you want to see how many zoos in a given country have a particular species, I suggest you look at Zootierliste.

The question wasn’t just zoo’s.

Considering the CITES I status, the fact that
- few are in captivity in general
- they are hard to breed and if they do, they reproduce slow
- very few zoo’s have them

I would think that for a private individual to obtain one would be very hard.

But with enough financial incentive, there are countries within it’s range that might be persuaded to part with one or two. I just don’t think a private individual would ever go through all the paper work to get it though.

There have been exports of Harpy eagles to Europe from the range countries (and 1 from the US) for the last 15 years. Most of them can be directly related to the animals present in European zoos. The only exception is an export from Surinam to Belgium for personal use in 2015 for 3 Harpy eagles. As UK has been in the EU until recently those animals could have moved to the UK without the need for them to be reported as an export. So there is the possibility that there are Harpy Eagles in the UK legally although the options are very limited.
