I don't know if this topic has been used before. If you don't want to name employers, I quite understand. Just a bit of fun!

Never worked with Zoo animals, but spent 17 years working with racehorses, first as a jockey, and then as a assistant trainer and pre trainer and then as a very hands on owner. Now have my own small private collection and planning to have my own zoo open in 2026 all being well.
I wish that when I left school, that I went into working with exotics than racehorses to be honest. Always loved all animals, and happiest around them.
Hopefully, the passion I have, will lead to having a conservation and educational facility which is of benefit to animals in the future.

Not exotics but I grew up with horses as my father trained and owned horses (eventing and dressage) for many years. Wouldn’t have been the career for me but I still enjoy going along to events and watching the sport. It’s how I first got into photography and that lead to wildlife and to zoos. I much appreciate peoples hard work with animals that I can go and see, though having pets is enough for me.

Iike most on here would have loved to have worked with animals, I wanted to be a zookeeper when I was young but didn't follow it through.
Luckily for me my daughter is living my dream as a zookeeper now.

I'd love to open my own zoo one day. What species do you intend to have in your zoo?

Your plans sounds very exciting looking forward to visiting your zoo when it opens

Plenty of folks here do or have worked in zoos (myself included), but you won't get many responses due to the general distain this site faces from the industry.
Really, well that's a shame. I would have thought that zoos could do with all the goodwill that they can get

Would working with pets count because when I was in Boy Scouts I took care of a bearded dragon named Aragon and the lizard belonged to a friend of mine and they went away from some time and I looked after Aragon and before I took care of him I hadn’t taken care of a lizard or a reptile for that matter before and it was my first experience of taking care of a reptile because before I took care of Aragon I only took care of fish.

I am currently working on a farm as a Livestock Assistant so at the moment mainly farm animals like cattle, horses, sheep, donkeys, ponies, goats and small domestic animals like rabbits, guinea pigs and degu.
However from 2016 to 2019 I volunteered at 3 different collections and gained hands on experience with many zoo species ranging from zebra to giraffe, rhinos to antelope, macaques to to capybara. And also many more including reindeer, cuban hutia, maned wolf and others.
I also worked with many species during my time at Shuttleworth college when I was studying for my Animal Management Level 3 diploma.
My goal is to work as a zookeeper.

If you don’t mind me asking but what was it like working with rhinos, the maned wolf, antelope, macaque, zebra and giraffe and hopefully you accomplish your goal of becoming a zookeeper because when I was younger I wanted to be a zookeeper but not anymore.

I work with a great selection of primates; guenons, marmosets and langurs. I used to work with lemurs but they are no longer at the zoo I work at. I would like to move up to work as a Great Ape keeper in the future.

In my experience, there will be time's working with Great Apes when you require a lot of patience. Best of luck with your plan
