Just wanted to say a big hello! i'm new to the forum! I work at Belfast Zoo with a range of exotics including Black-footed cats, lemurs. sloth and malayan tapir! I love visiting zoos and hearing any zoo news! ive been to over 60 zoos so far! looking forward to starting to talk

I'm jealous of the fact that you can work with tapirs!!

So can you keep us updated with news at Belfast?

Welcome aboard! I hope you learn as much as I have.

yep sure no probs! have you been before or know much about its collection?

Nope, I know basically nothing about it apart from the fact it keeps (or has kept) Southern bald ibis, Malayan tapir and sun bears.

Any news, especially from birds and Tapirs would be appreciated.

Welcome AI, Hope you like it here, we dont get to much zoo news from your Country

collection news

We do indeed have sunbear and southern bald ibis! regarding the malayan tapir we recently sent our two year old male to denver in america and have had another male born about two months ago! our 7th calf to date! bird wise we our currently redeveloping our bird park so hav alot of new species planned to arrive in the next few months! historically we specialised in cockatoos (10species), turacos (10spp) and traopans(4spp)! however we now only keep two sp of trag and 4 sp turaco! we however have 3sp of balck cocktoo which is nice!

Other nice species we have r mhorrs gazelle, francois and purple faced langur, verrauxs sifaka, temmincks golden cat,black-footed cat an moloch gibbons! we have alot of the abc species penguins, sealions, tigers, lions, cheetah, wild dogs, elephants, zebra, giraffe etc

Welcome to zoobeat Al!:)

Perhaps you could write a review of Belfast Zoo in the UK forum for members like myself and others who don't know that much about Belfast Zoo?

Oh and that is a great record with the malayan tapir calves!

A review of Belfast Zoo would definitely be appreciated.

Hello Al,

I joined about a month ago and have learnt so much... There are some amazingly knowledgable people here and some passionate debates...

I too would enjoy a review (if you have the time)...

Happy posting...

Opps just realised you joined before me... LOL

We are down to a single male cabots and our last male blyths went to a private breeder with a number of other animals from other zoos.

There isn't much problem in acquiring Cabot's tragopans though. I was looking at buying a pair for myself, but when I saw the price, £800, I decided to leave it!

Blyth's on the other hand are very much rarer. San Diego has a bit of success, but these birds are becoming very inbred. There is a pheasantry in the netherlands that specialises with Tragopans.

Congratulations with your tapir breeding, Could you post a picture on the gallery? I've seen all 4 tapir species, and although my favourite is the mountain, I do like malayan tapirs a lot too.

Welcome Al. And also add my congrats. for brilliant record with Tapirs.

Looking forward to regular updates from Belfast.

Cheers

Tragopans are very beautiful birds, but as Hornbill says the Caboots isnt a particuar rare species, but maybe Belfast dont want to keep this species anymore.
