Hello! I’m Sundara/Sunny and I am from Columbus. My home zoo is the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium which I visit once a week to see my favorite animal, the Asian Elephant. My favorite elephant is Sundara as I love her personality and her hairy head. I have been lurking on Zoochat for awhile fowling the elephant threads and I have finally decided to join! I am so glad to be here and I can’t wait to meet everyone!

Welcome! I visited Columbus two years ago and ended up visiting for two days instead of the planned one :)

Welcome! Asian Elephants are also my favorite animal and I love seeing them at Columbus when I make my annual visit :). Unfortunately I can’t see elephants too often as the closest (Columbus and Cincinnati) are an hour away from where I am (Dayton). It’s great to see another Ohioan here on the forum though :).

Welcome!

I too am a massive elephant fan and can’t wait to see your contribution to this site (and the inside info you can bring us being a Columbus native!).

Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed your visit! I personally find it hard to do the whole zoo in one day as is it so big and impressive!

Thanks! I’m glad you are able to visit the Columbus and Cincinnati Zoo even though you don’t live close. With Cincinnati going to expand their elephant facility and bring in four new elephants Ohio is becoming a great state to see elephants!

Welcome to ZC!!!
Thank you all for the welcomes! I really appreciate it and I am so glad to be here!

Welcome to ZooChat @Sundara. Even if I do see your username and think of the cow at Chester Zoo before her North American counterpart at the Columbus Zoo. :D

The fact that Columbus's cow is nicknamed 'Sunny' is perfect for me so I don't confuse the pair!

I’m sure it would be on your to visit list. It’s a must for any elephant lover.

The Hi Ways are undoubtedly the most popular elephant family in the world. A must see for any zoo lover, let alone an elephant lover.

I completely agree! Chester Zoo and the Hi Ways are definitely on my bucket list and it would be a dream to see my favorite bull elephant Aung Bo.

That is a good trick when it comes to talking about both of them. For me personally being a Columbus native, I think of the elephant at Chester as Sundara Hi Way and the elephant at Columbus as Sundara or Sunny.

Yep that would be a good way of remembering them. It's really interesting to note Chester is the only zoo worldwide to give their elephant herd 'last names'. Although that only benefits Chester's ability to publicise their herd and make them incredibly popular with the public.

Aung Bo could one day become a historically significant elephant given his pioneering role in the research into EEHV.

His participation in the trial means he’s likely to remain at Chester for the forseable and breed with Sundara at least once more.

I'd imagine the best course is to breed him with Sundara at least once more (to hopefully produce another girl), before sending him away. In three to four years time Indali will be ready to have her first calf, and so Chester will preferably have another bull on site by then.
