Buffalo Zoo Heritage Farm Children's Zoo

I was there today for the opening. I was one of the first in line. I rushed to Heritage Farms, their new exhibit. I think it’s quite charming and will be a delight for children, which it is geared towards. There are signs in different locations with little stories about the farm itself, with two children guides (cut outs) along the way. The renovated barn looks brand new on the inside with nice stalls for their animals. Candy Ann, the mule, is hard to miss with her big stature. On the other side is one animal I’m sure is going to melt people’s hearts, Ruby, the Devon milking cow. She’s a one year old calf and cute as can be. If you get the chance to go in her holding area to pet her, you’ll notice her fur is so soft! But be gentle, she only likes to be pet on her back/stomach and can be quite skittish. When you go in the barn there’s an area for Dwight and Jim, the two Berkshire pigs. Like Ruby, the like to be pet on their side and not on the face. Each indoor holding area talks about the animal and the use of them back in the 1800’s. There are also big pictures of animals with little circles on their bodies that you can lift up to see what things each animal provide (meat, milk, wool, etc.) There’s also a little area for children to play in and collect eggs from the chickens, aprons included! Two stalls, besides the animals in the outside stalls, you’ll notice are empty are for Southdown sheep and a turkey. I’ve heard they are coming soon! The outside area has a chicken shed with Dominique chickens. If they aren’t outside in their small yard, there’s a window in their pen that you can see them in. There’s also a small pond area that’s just beautiful to see. In that area there’s an animal scat game children can play that I find amusing and informative. There’s also a beautiful carved bench with wild forest animals on the sides. Be sure to also check out pen where they used to dry vegetables in (I may have this information incorrect) – an owl, Silo, has taken residence there. A docent told me he usually likes to perch up on the light the most. I didn’t go on the boat in their replica Erie Canal, but it looks like fun for children.

Today was also the Zoo's 135th Birthday, or the celebration for it. Personally, I thought it was a little lackluster from other themed weekends they've had. Of course I was only there for the first hour and half. But the first couple of events happened in a matter of a couple minuted, canceled, or late. I was hoping for more tables with animal photos, the animals's artwork, raffles, silent auctions, things they've done in the past. If anyone else went, I'd love to hear their opinion. I wish I could have stayed the whole day to really experience it all.
