Hi everyone! I’m Karra, the current Voice of Conservation at Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa after winning a competition. I’m spending 3 months on the reserve, helping out with things like the introduction of two new cheetahs, aiding with the game capture of the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra as well as essential day-to-day tasks like cutting back invasive foreign trees. It’s been amazing so far – I’m so glad to be helping out with the animal conversation I’ve cared about all my life.
But there’s no way I can ignore one of the worst problems facing conservation efforts in South Africa. It’s killed almost a rhino a day this year, it’s becoming increasingly sophisticated and hard to stop, it’s utterly brutal – I’m talking about the poaching of rhinos for their horns. So far this year over 285 rhinos have been slaughtered by poachers.
While I enjoy all the fantastic things I get to do at Shamwari, this is weighing on my mind. I want to do more about it, speak up, make more people talk about it and try to stop it. This isn’t the only kind of poaching in Africa and it isn’t the only problem, but I know I can’t try to change the entire world at once!
I'm talking to the anti-poaching unit at Shamwari about what I can do, but I'd love to get your input. I currently blog about rhino poaching (and more) - Educating the community | Worldwide Experience - I'd love to talk to people about my experiences at the blog or here. The company who ran the competition is linking to my posts from their FB and Twitter. But what else do you think I could be doing?
If you can't think of anything right now, then no worries - it's nice to meet you all and I hope to get to know some of my fellow animal-lovers.
