Hi Everyone,

New to ZooChat. I have a question. London Zoo's oldest Giraffe died a few weeks ago aged 31. Did she hold the oldest longevity record for that species?

No, 31 years is not the longevity record for the species.

The book “Longevity of Mammals in Captivity; From the Living Collections of the World” (Richard Weigl; 2005) lists a reticulated giraffe that was at San Antonio Zoo from 5th August 1961 until she died on 10th July 1995. This animal was believed to have been wild born in 1955.

This book also lists several other zoo giraffes that lived for longer than 31 years.

Hi Tim

Hi Tim

Gary here, yes I'm Gazman ZSL! Thanks for your reply. So the San Antonio Zoo hold the record for a Giraffe of at least 35+ in age. This will be very useful for my Giraffe folder i'm making for the Cotton's trolley.

Ps
I bought on Ebay yesterday a newspaper article about the first birth of a Giraffe at London Zoo back in 18.., will photocopy it for you.

Sounds like a very interesting book. I'll have to find that one!
