CWSR have 2.1 pygmy hippo and 1.2 common hippo.
regarding the common hippo one female is the mother of the male.
in the case of the pygmy hippo, one male is the offspring of the other two.

I figured since so much interest in the Werribee hippo birth ... why not start a thread on all hippo species in Australian and New Zealand zoos. :)

I will start with the pygmy hippos as the discussion still rages on the Werribee common hippo (lol)!

What is the status of the pygmy hippo locally? Which zoos keep them at the moment? How related are the pygmy hippos currently in ARAZPA zoos?

Any chance that both male pygmy hippos from Cairns might be exchanged with breeding pairs elsewhere?

Does anyone know what the recommendations from the ASMP for pygmy hippo is right now?

jelle - now thats a conversation thats been going on for years. try the "pygmy hippo" thread...

i dont think this thread is a bad idea actually. to be honest, there is such a PLETHORA of information out there about hippos here in Australia. it would be nice to consolidate the facts. we crap on so much in this forum about rhinos, rhinos rhinos but here we have another charismatic mega-vertebrate with quite an interesting history of birhs, deaths and marriages. lets get the facts.

no, glyn's giving me a bit, because i drop "plethora" a lot...

i think i've always liked it since that scene in "three amigos"...

Here at taronga we have 1.2 pygmy hippos. One of the females, katie, is very old, but the two younger ones, Male from melbourne and female from adelaide are young and hopefully will breed, and i no dubbo have 2.3 Commons.
