Hello all, I am doing some research into two zoos in Mackay - McGuire's Hotel and Zoo which closed in the 1950s and Bayersville Zoo which closed in the early 1980s. Both were granted B Class licences for zoological gardens and museums. My specific interest is a dome of taxidermy birds which came from Bayersville, and possibly McGuire's Zoo.
An academic thesis on McGuire's states that "in 1929 regulations were being enforced which governed the collection and the use of certain protected species. A full list of live animals, mounted specimens, birds' eggs etc was required by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in order to assess whether a permit would be issued allowing the collection, or display of such material"
The DPI was not formed until the 1960s and its precursor was the Department of Agriculture and Stock.
If I could obtain the list I might be able to find out if the paradise parrot was indeed displayed at McGuires! The answer is probably in the Queensland State Archives but love to hear from anyone with alternative sources of information!
