The tri-colored blackbird is an endemic blackbird species in California that has massive communal nests that may contain tens of thousands of birds. The birds are wetland inhabitants and most of their original habitat in the Central Valley of California has been converted to farmland. There are attempts to halt further destruction of the remaining communal nests and hopefully conserve a healthy population of the species.
