Bronx Zoo How Many Geladas?

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows how many geladas are at the Bronx Zoo. I know they have a large troop, but was wondering just how large. Is there any chance some geladas from Bronx get sent to other AZA facilities so the species becomes well-established in the USA?

The zoo has just under 20 Geladas last I checked. If there was genuine interest, there are many, many Geladas which could be imported from European zoos to establish a US program. Several of Bronx's animals came from Europe a few years ago, as did San Diego's and the zoo in Canada's.

If I did my head count right, San Diego had 4-5 bachelor gelada. I’ve spoken to a keeper before saying that they want to still get some females to integrate. This was told to me close to a year ago so that could’ve changed by now.

I believe SDZ does have all males still, though I'm not sure. I'm sure the zoo could pretty easily acquire females, preferably from Europe for genetic diversity's sake, but I'd imagine COVID has made international transport a bit difficult over the past year. Fingers crossed they do indeed get some in.

Do you think that they can acquire enough females to make a troop from Europe and establish a breeding population? I really hope they do and I’d love to see the group dynamics between the integrated troop, the males act like young boys scrapping on the play ground and then take time outs :D

Well there are over 400 Geladas kept in European zoos so they definitely could. There are plenty of animals for plenty of US zoos and Bronx could easily double or triple their numbers if they wanted to. Now will this happen? Likely not but San Diego certainly could acquire a decent number of new founders depending on how much space they can devote to them.

I think once they are operational once again they may seek to getting females for the group given that they seem to have 3 rotational yards for the hamadryas baboons and geladas. The middle yard is needing to have a glass panel fixed prior last I saw and it would definitely help with overflow if the group became much bigger. Let’s hope they do and I feel positive yet hesitant about it  haha
