I’m from Texas, I have been to the Brookfield Zoo when I was young. And it was a really cool zoo. As much as the Brookfield Zoo is one of the best Zoos in the US, there has arguably been some outdated exhibits and empty spaces over the past recent years, and I think that it’s time for the Brookfield Zoo to have some new changes. So here’s what I’ve been thinking.
Habitat Africa - The Savanna:
Habitat Africa - The Savanna:
- Remove the Pachyderm Building to make it an exhibit for African Elephants (Species that the Brookfield Zoo should bring back) and make new exhibits for the Black Rhinos at the east-end of where the Hoofstock is currently.
- Mix Zebras in with the Giraffes as well as an addition of new species to the Giraffe exhibit such as Ostriches, Warthogs, Thompson Gazelle, and Lesser Kudu.
- Make new exhibits for the Lions near the Rhinos that is themed to the African Savanna as well as a new Addax exhibit that is Desert-themed.
- Reopen the Aardvark house with new Aardvarks in there.
- Have a new exhibit for Cheetahs (a new species to the Zoo's collection) outside of the Aardvark house.
- Remove the wire fences from the Okapi exhibit to make the exhibit look more realistic.
- Have an all-new exhibit for Nile Hippopotamuses which also includes an underwater viewing area near the exit of the exhibit.
- Add a walk-through aviary that includes several African forest bird species (feel free to make some suggestions).
- Remove and renovate the entirely of the area since it's extremely outdated and divide it into 2 exhibits; new half of Habitat Africa - The Savanna at the East-end as mentioned above and a new exhibit called Endangered Asia at the West-end with new paths to more exhibits.
- Endangered Asia will be themed to Eastern Asian and will have new exhibits for Amur Tigers, a rotational exhibit for Snow Leopards and Amur Leopards, and Red Pandas.
- I might be alone on this, but I think this area should bring back Giant Pandas and have a much new state-of-the-art exhibit which has enough space for them to roam as well as an indoor viewing area for them with signs that teaches people how they can protect them.
- Another new addition for this area that I think the zoo should have are Takins where they can have a mountain-like themed exhibit for them.
- The Bactrian Camels and Wild Horses from the former Hoofstock will still be part of the Zoo's collection in Endangered Asia, but they’ll have much more realistic exhibits.
- Remove the wire surrounding the Bald Eagle exhibit to make it look less hokey and more realistic.
- Have an artificial snow machine for the Polar Bear exhibit.
- Give the Penguins saltwater to swim in and make the pool deeper.
- This building should be renovated into a bird house since having two reptile and bird houses doesn’t really seem necessary.
- Relocate the reptiles and amphibians to where the Reptile and Bird House is now.
- The birds from the Reptile and Bird House should be relocated here.
- Have a free-flight walkthrough indoor aviary themed to a tropical jungle.
- Be renovated into a reptile house since having two reptile and bird houses doesn’t really seem necessary.
- Relocate the birds to where Feathers and Scales is now.
- The Reptiles and Amphibians from Feathers and Scales should be relocated here.
- Give outdoor exhibits for the Gorillas, Orangutans, Gibbons, and other primates.
- Mix the Colobus Monkeys, Spot-Nosed Guenons, Swamp Monkeys, and the Gorillas together.
- Replace the hokey fake trees and plants with more realistic trees and plants.
- Add grass and dirt to the concrete floors of the exhibits.
- Remove the wire netting around most of the enclosures to make it look more realistic.
- Have a free-flight walkthrough indoor aviary.
- Remove Egyptian Fruit Bats from the Bat Exhibit.
- Combine all 4 Kangaroo yards together and remove the wire fencing and give it a more desert-themed look to make it look more realistic.
- Give the Lemurs an outdoor exhibit.
- Add grass to most of the indoor exhibits such as the Lemurs.
- Since the Red Pandas will be relocated, the current Red Panda should house another small carnivore species (feel free to give me some options on what should be in the Red Panda exhibit).
- Have a new Meerkat exhibit which includes an underground walkthrough tunnel that goes through the exhibit and has viewing bubbles for children.
- Add more domestic livestock to the area.
- Renovate the entire pavilion and make the pool more larger and deeper for the Dolphins.
- Have a big off-show tank for the Dolphins with an underwater viewing area.
- Have saltwater in the tanks.
- Combine all the Seal and Sea Lion exhibits together to make it a mixed exhibit.
- Remove the netting to make it look more realistic.
- Use salt water for the tanks.
- Since the Big Cats would be relocated elsewhere around the zoo, the remaining animal in this area would be the Sloth Bear, and the exhibit should combine all grottos to make it one big Sloth Bear enclosure which includes an artificial termite mound.
- The Meerkats will be relocated to Wild Encounters and the exhibit will have Egyptian Fruit Bats instead.
- Remove the metal netting surrounding most of the enclosures to make it look more realistic.
