Hello, I just joined ZooChat. I stumbled upon this forum while doing research and liked it enough to join the membership.

My initial interest was with finding a projected date for the opening of SDZ's WAP, and came across quite a few interesting comments. I'm not a zoo vet, as some might think, but an author with the chosen pen name of "ZooDoc," which comes from one of my fictional characters who does happen to be a zoo vet. I hope none of you are offended by this name choice. There are quite a few real zoo docs out there in cyber space and in the real world, and I applaud all of you for your dedication and hard work.

Ever since I was a kid, I've had a fascination with animals. I was known in the community as one of those kids who was always nursing ailing animals back to health. I fondly recall dropper feeding a beautiful, injured ruby-throated hummingbird until it was able fly away. I did likewise with a coot and a seagull. The seagull was especially cool. Whenever it was almost strong enough to fly away, I took it outside and tossed it into the air and was ready to catch it, but it actually flew four or five feet before it landed. The next day, it flew about ten feet. And the next day, it flew away. I can only imagine how exciting it must be to release a restored eagle or condor! I'm now known in this community north of Sacramento as the Raccoon Man. :)

I am a Diamond Member of the San Diego Zoological Society, as well as a few other wildlife conservation organizations, including the BOS and The Wilderness Classroom. I love and respect what all of you have done and are doing out there to protect and conserve the natural beauty of our living planet.

Anyway, I've been babbling enough. If anyone wants to check out my web site, please go to ZooDoc Mainpage and you will learn more about me and what prompted me to write War Star Rising! The Legend of Toucan Moon. Also I'm on MySpace under "ZooDoc", and a member of Author Nation and My Writers Circle, as well as The Belize Forums.

Looking forward to meeting some of you and reading many of your threads.

Welcome to ZooChat, ZooDoc. I once spent a few days nursing a bird which had had its nest raided. Whatever had done it had eaten the contents of all the other eggs but this one somehow survived. I gave it to a local wildlife rescue centre to care for it but unfortunately it died the next day. I am glad you had more success.

Hello and welcome to ZooChat!!!

Thanks. Nice to meet you Scott. I'd be honored if you found the time some week to read "War Star Rising! The Legend of Toucan Moon," by ZooDoc, aimed at the middle-school, YA readers. It's about a Mayan princess in 850 A.D. who detests war, slavery and human sacrificing and makes it her personal mission in life to bring an end to all the violence and mistreatment of the disadvantaged masses. In the process, she manages to fall in love, and has a small window of opportunity to actually try and save her father's kingdom from a vicious overlord of another kingdom. The animals involved in my story are all indigenous to Belize, with the possible exception of a "great condor." (Who knows for sure where the condors migrated, between those of the Andean Condor and the California species?) Anyway, in the story I have a green squirrel monkey, black howlers, tapirs (or "mountain cows," as they call them in Belize), King Vulture, yellow-jaw Tommy-Goff (pit viper), and an orange jaguar, and a black jaguar. Despite the simplistic language, I think you'll find the story inspiring for all ages, including young people. You can check it out at Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.com, or go to my website at ZooDoc Mainpage. I enjoy your comments and your many posted pics. Thanks again for stopping by. ZD
