Howletts Wild Animal Park Howletts Animal Information

Firstly I would just like to say a big "hello" to everyone ;)

I have not been to Howletts since I was little so obviously I have little/no recollection of the actual park and the animals that it holds. I plan to go sometime during the next couple of weeks but having looked on the Howletts website I am left with more questions than answers.

I am a huge animal lover of all shapes and sizes but ultimately I am a huge fanatic of big cats and love spending my time visiting as many as possible.

I would very much appreciate if you could help answer some of my questions

How many tigers are at Howletts and what subspecies are they? Also how many cat species does the park hold? (big&small). Age and Sex would also be appreciated

Does Howletts hold any lions?

On their website- PLEASE NOTE: Our Canadian timber wolves are currently off show. Is that still the case?

The Iberian wolves at Howletts and Port Lympne are now split into two single sex groups. Can anyone confirm how many co-exist at Howletts and whether they are male or female?

Thank You.

Hi and welcome to Zoochat.

I can answer some of your questions, others will no doubt fill in the gaps...

Tigers- they are mainly Siberian, with one pair of Sumatran. There used to be crossbred Indian tigers too but possibly these have died out now. I can't give you number, age or sex breakdown though.

Lions- Last year there was one pair of 'Barbary'(so-called) Lions at Howletts- they are a maneless/castrated male and a female. Both were born at Port Lympne (I think). I presume they are still there.

Other cats- from memory there are Pallas Cats, Clouded Leopard, Chinese Leopard and Lynx. Could be other species I have missed.

Canadian Wolves- can't answer.

Iberian Wolves. There is a single sex group(don't know which though) at Howletts, about four or five(?) individuals. The ones at Port Lympne have recently been returned to Spain.

Additional cat species i think still there are snow leopard, ocelot, serval and fishing cat.

We saw the lions last week, so they're still there. There were a lot of small cats but not all were visible – they're cats! – many were curled up out of sight. We did see (from memory) pallas cats, fishing cats, servals and a snow leopard. The "small cat" enclosure marked on the current map is now given over to an adventure climbing area for humans (deserted when we went). We could see Iberian wolves at the far end of their enclosure – couldn't count at that distance. Didn't see Canadian timber wolves so perhaps they are still off-show. The dholes were great, though. African hunting dogs too (though I'm a bit blase about those as we have them at London Zoo). Lots of elephants, easy to see in their paddocks (though not up close). Sorry, can't answer questions about age and sex and subspecies as I don't have that sort of detailed interest.

I shall be very interested to hear your impression of the zoo as it is now, compared to how it was when you were little!

Any Bengals at Howletts?

I know they 2 Sumatran tigers(male and female) but again im not sure how Amur they have or anything else.

Unfortunately I do not have any Tesco vouchers, so is there any other way of getting myself a discount?

Howletts should still have somewhere between 1-3 old hybrid tigers that they label as "bengal". Howletts bred them but stopped in the early 90'th, I guess because it became clear that none of them were pure bengal tigers. A few animals of the last litters still lived iin Howletts and P.L. at my last visit 2 years ago.

Howletts now has a breeding pair of amur tigers (but no offspring at the moment as far as I know) and a pair of sumatran tigers that, after my knowlegde, have failed to breed so far. I guess they could take in another pair of pure tigers as soon as the last "bengal" tigers have died.

On my recent visit to PL, they still held a pair( i think) of cross bred 'bengal tigers', but on my last visit to Howletts, the enclosure that used to hold them(next to the lynx) was being adapted for the leopards. I dont recall seing any tigers other than a pair of sumatran & amur, the lions had what was formerly another tiger enclosure.

Assuming they're still there, then nobody has yet mentioned the only African wildcats in Britain [only other places listed on zootierliste are in 1 in Russia and and 1 in UAE]

Don't know how we all forgot them, thanks. I can't remember seeing them on my last visit about a year ago, but i think AD stated they were now next to the ocelot in the enclosures near the cafe & playground. I think there were only ocelot there before, but i may be wrong.

There is the two Cross bred Bengal Tiger brothers Calcutta and Delhi at Port Lympne down at the bottom of the park near the Barbary Lions and the new Restaurant, and there is Manas and Lahore at Howletts, since the two hand reared Amur cubs have been at howletts, the two cubs had the enclosure nearest to the walkthrough lemur enclosure, the two Amurs (Malchek and Nika) have the one next door nearest to the picnic area although malchek and nika are separated presumably because they don't want to breed from malchek as he is nearly 17, and Manas and Lahore have the two smaller enclosures at the back that are opposite the Capybaras.

Its quite a complicated lay out and must be quite hard for the keepers and the Part that Nika is in is quite small and also Arina the cub has a large enclosure to herself, One of the old tiger enclosures is now used for the Barbary Lions and another old enclosure near the lynx and restaurant is now used for North Chinese Leopards.

Sorry if I'm just repeating info already given but Howletts has:

2 'Barbary' Lions
2 'Bengal' tigers
3 Siberian tigers (1 female cub in a separate enclosure)
2 Sumatran tigers

I have no idea on ages, sorry

The timber wolves are still off show and I think there are 5 Iberian wolves.

They also have fishing cats (2 I think), clouded leopards (1 on show, loads off show), north chinese leopards (3), Indian desert cat (1), snow leopards (2), african wild cats (2), ocelots (2), lynx (2) and servals (last I knew there were 2). I think that's all

Howletts seem to have gone right down as far as numbers of Tigers held. In days gone by there seemed to be Tigers everywhere at Howletts. Now it seems there is more emphasis on the 'pures' however.

Howletts....

'Back in the day', it was something of a novelty to be able to breed lots of tigers, and any tiger still had a value. It eventually got to where everybody who wanted a tiger, had got one, and Aspinalls had to rethink their policy.
