Can anyone give me a update of the current herd ?

I heard a female was pregnat ?

and havent they opened a new paddock onto their existing one ? is there more to follow a new house maybe ?

I think there is a new paddock next to the rhino house, can't help with pregnancies though sorry.
Do they need a new house? I guess their current one might be a bit small, does anyone have pictures of the inside?

A new Elephant house. I understand that the keepers have being hoping for this for a long time. Given the cost of building a new house today given the geographical position it would be huge cost!!!

The Aspinall fund is in a rapid decline. Can’t see it happening any time soon.
 
Does anyone know if Jums, the breeding bull is going to be moved on and replaced anytime soon. He's had 9 calves at howletts so far, and 2 of his daughters are of breeding age now?

If Umna had a calf it would mean there would be 4 generations in the herd!!!
 
I don't know if Jums is being replaced, but it would probably be better if he was swapped with another zoo.
Their herd structure there is brilliant, probably the best in the UK, maybe one of the best in Europe?
 
why not reintegrate the ex-Knowsley bull Kruger and the remaining 2 African cows at Port Lympne back into the main breeding herd at Howletts?

A matter of room and also they wouldn't have any elephants on display at Port Lypmne.But they could swap the two bulls over as Kruger is of course unrelated to all the cows at Howletts.
 
Does anyone know what happened to the female African elephant who died at Port Lympne? As in what did she die of, how old was she etc.

The very reason the new bull was brought in was to have unrelated offspring once the PL starts breeding there. The females are offspring of the current Bekesbourne bull. :)
 
If you mean that the females at P.L. are from Jums, the Howletts bull, that`s not correct. P.L. has just 2 females left, Lara and her daugther Issa. Lara is Ramat Gan-born and the daugther of their first bull who died early, and she arrived pregnant in Howletts, pregant by her half-brother Yossi. So Issa is the result of inbreeding, Yossi is her father and her uncle. Neither Lara nor Issa are related with Jums, but with serveral females of the Howletts herd, because Tammi and Stavit are also born in Ramat Gan and daugthers of Yossi.

By the way, the female who died was Shara, and I heard she died from twisted intestines. She was born in 1978.
 
jums breed with his 11 and 12 year old daughters Justa and Umna, which makes me wonder why Kruger wasn't integrated into the Howletts herd.

Mistakes happen but with his daughters ages it does beg the question, why he was allowed in the same enclosure as his mature daughters?
 
Thanks for the comments regarding Jums. It seems now a little peculiar why the 3 cows were sent off to Port Lympne ... in the first place. Was Jums not compatible with them (one wonders)? :confused:

It is true however that after the relocation of the Asian elephants the paddock had been unoccupied and the herd in Bekesbourne was bursting at the seams .... :eek:

Secondly, I seems right to propose that Kruger be sent out to Bekesbourne for breeding with Jums's sired offspring.

You answered your own question.;) The empty Asian elephant paddocks at Port Lympne needed filling after their policy to keep Africans only.
