Howletts Wild Animal Park Howletts First Gorillas.

Typing this in a hurry, meant to say sad to see the animals that have died since the booklets were printed! Too much to do, even in the snow!!

I don't know the rhinos well, my pal used to look after them at Port Lympne, she left about 1 year ago. Some were brought to the wild I beleive, you would know more about that than me.

Was your pal there when they held the Sumatran Rhinos?

As I love all zoo related book I got hold of a copy of "The best of Friends" from an online secondhand book seller. I also noticed about the Gorillas recieving a beer allowance and also that their diet included meat which was made as a stew. I have it in my mind that gorillas are totally vegeterian in the wild state and am being lazy by not looking it up. Does anyone know if the Howlett gorillas still get beer and meat and if other gorilla diets from around the world include meat?

I remember reading in the book that they only get a small portion of meat because in the wild if they found a carcass etc they may have some. Im pretty sure that Gorillas arent strictly vegitarian - Correct me if im wrong please!...

I have just posted two scans in the gallery. One is from my first visit in June 1974, I think it's of Gugis - but I'd be grateful if someone can confirm that. I also found a photo of Kijo, who died a few weeks ago, as a youngster from 1976.

I doubt whether they get beer anymore- there are far too many animals now and I think that rather eccentric aspect probably disappeared a long while ago. Am I right or wrong here?

As for meat, Columbus used to feed it too a long while ago. I don't know if any other zoos do so nowadays- quite possibly some do but its always been an exception rather than a rule.
