Which zoo would you reccomend visiting if had to choose out of the two.

Are there elephants and gorillas at both? I plan to visit one of the two at easter via public transport.

My recommendation, particularly for a first visit, would be Howletts every time, particularly since they transformed Port Lympne into a sort of Safari Park where much of it is now only accessible by their motorised transport(trucks).

Howletts is also much smaller in size but has both more Gorillas and more Elephants than Port Lympne. Probably easier to reach by public transport too.

Port Lympne has Drills, "Barbary" Lions, Brown Hyenas and Bush Dogs as stand-out highlights. I'd tend to agree that those apart, Howletts is a better day for the quiet enjoyment of rare animals.

A few years ago, i'd have said Port Lympne, without hesitation, but they have ruined it and made a lot of it, a no go area. Howletts for me now without doubt. And as for them (PL) having Hyenas, You can't see the Hyenas anymore, unless you are lucky enough to catch the one on it's own as the rickety lorry you are now forced to take rushes past it's enclosure. If it's Elephants and Gorillas you are after Howletts wins hands down, as you can no longer get up as close to the Elephants at PL as you could and they have made one of the Gorilla enclosures (My favourite one.) off show.

Howletts, Howletts, Howletts, until PL reverse their disgraceful changes.

If you decide on Howletts, you catch a train to Bekesbourne Station and then about a 15 min walk to zoo entrance, or by bus from Canterbury you would need to catch the Sandwich bus and get off in Littlebourne and again 10 to 15 min walk. Port Lympne get off in No 10 bus from Ashford or Folkestone and Otterpool Lane, most of the bus drivers are very friendly, so just mention you need to get off for the zoo.?( As it easter wk-end i would recommend checking train and bus routes as not all go to said stations or bus stops.~)Having worked as a keeper at both collections in the past, for a first time visit i would recommend Howletts, but that just my personal opion.
